Mmmm ... Baycon

Rather than a blow-by-blow recap of the weekend, I’ve decided to simply note some highlights of Baycon 2010:

Highlights and a few picsCollapse )

I had the great privilege of making a birthday cake for graphic designer and artist Lee Moyer, the Artist Guest of Honor at Baycon 2010. I decided to use one of his designs as my inspiration for the cake.

My chosen design.

Spelling Bee Draws Protesters

... According to literature distributed by the group, it makes more sense for "fruit" to be spelled as "froot," "slow" should be "slo," and "heifer" — a word spelled correctly during the first oral round of the bee Thursday by Texas competitor Ramesh Ghanta — should be "hefer." ...

He's coming up!

Paul McCartney coming to AT&T Park in SF on July 10! Tickets go on presale Thursday!

Anyone want to go?

I'm just spinning my wheels ...

Biking leaves lots of time for thinking. Mostly, these thoughts consist of, "Man, my legs hurt," "Make it to the next stoplight and you can have water," and "Come on, BREATHE".

Occasionally, though, something slips out that I'd actually like to write down. Consequently, I've made a separate cycling LJ, spinning2wheels. If you're interested in reading my random cycling thoughts, please Friend! If not ... well, there's a reason I made a separate blog instead of just posting here!

I'm Just a Sweet ... Transylvanian

It took 14 years and a lot of choreography, but I finally performed as a Transylvanian this past Saturday!

(For those keeping track, this leaves three roles I haven't played - Rocky, Dr. Scott, and Eddie.)

I chose the one with long red hair, so I would finally not need a wig! (Her hair is puffier than mine, but it's a work in progress.)

Thanks Kirsten and tarzxf for the pics!

Heeeere, package package package ...

On Friday, I ordered a costume piece from Amazon for overnight delivery. I got an e-mail stating that "weather conditions" meant my package would likely be delayed. Sure enough, no delivery. An inconvenience, but whatever. I got my shipping fee refunded and checked UPS.com to see if I'd get it today.

Well, imagine my surprise when the tracking page showed the package as having been delivered Saturday morning! Tom got home from an appointment shortly after the claimed delivery time, so he would have seen it, but he didn't. Our roommate has confirmed that he didn't bring it inside. I called UPS, and they swear it was dropped at my front door on Saturday. "Check with your neighbors," they said.

Thinking that maybe they really delivered it to the complex office, I called the manager. Not only does she not have the package, but she said she's never known UPS to deliver to our complex on Saturdays except at Christmas. The plot thickens.

Here, I suppose, are the possibilities:
- The package was never delivered.
- The package was delivered to the wrong apartment.
- The package was dropped between my apartment and the one next door, and my neighbor didn't take a good look at the tag.
- A wormhole opened up on my doormat.
- Someone swiped it. (In which case they'll be sorely disappointed if they think they grabbed a DVD or something, and end up with a longline bra.)

Methinks a call to Amazon is in order.

ETA: Amazon said they'll send me a new one. Yay!

Writer's Block: Pet central

Some animal rights activists are fighting to replace the term 'owner' with 'guardian' to convey a more balanced relationship between a person and her or his pet. Do you agree or disagree with the importance of this mission?

Hell, calling myself the 'owner' is the ONLY way to keep a balanced relationship! My kitties rule the roost!
