Sees the Cake!

  • Jul. 7th, 2009 at 2:05 PM
York cake
As promised, here are photos of my Threadcakes contest entry, complete with the redone design on top.

Many thanks to [info]racerxmachina for alerting me to the contest!

I chose a design called "Sees the Day":

Sees the Cake!

I'm very pleased with the details that came out. Can you spot the monkeys, snake, and bird in the tree?

I love my radiant gradient, made without airbrushing!

I knew the cake wouldn't be enough to feed my co-workers, so I whipped up a batch of cupcakes and decorated them to match the theme.

If you'd like to see my contest entry page - which has many more pics of the process - check it out here.

Holy sh*t, dear! That is amazing! No wonder you were heartbroken to have lost the work on the first one... but it's spot on. I can see the bird and monkey, and the colors are so rich.

Wow... I can really tell that years of copying what Sue Blane did gave you an eye for detail.

That's ridiculously gorgeous. Your attention to detail and exact proportion is almost scary, and I'm blown away. How could anyone bring themselves to cut this, not to mention eat it? Though I'm sure it's yummilicious!

Know what I'd love to see you do? A version of "Starry Night" in cake form. You could totally do that. Or "The Scream"! OoooooO! A series of Impressionist Cakes! Stay away from pointillism, though. You'll get teh carpel tunnel. ;)

hi- I found your page the cake decorating group. This cake is amazing. You are very gifted! I'm just a newbie so I won't be able to produce anything like that anytime soon.

Thank you! If you're curious to see other stuff I've done, click the 'cake decorating' tag.

It takes practice. Lots of practice. Plus, everyone has their strengths. I've been at this 5 years, and I'm still amateurish with fondant and can barely make roses.

Keep practicing! Your friends/family/co-workers will thank you for it! ;-)

do you mind if I ask you what all of the black detail is done in? was it done in a type of icing? It looks really, really flat on the cake! I showed this to my husband who loves it as well!

It was done in buttercream, using a #1 writing tip (ow, my hand). It was a Frozen Buttercream Transfer (a beloved technique), so it came out flat when turned over.
