My childhood died yesterday.

I don't care.

I don't care about controversies, or weirdness, or lawsuits, or multiple plastic surgeries. I don't even care that I'm more emotional about this than I expected to be.

Yes, I was a fan of Michael Jackson. A big fan. I listened to "Rockin' Robin" over and over as a child. I danced to "Beat It" in a talent show as a 6-year-old - sparkly white glove and all. Thriller, Bad and Dangerous - I loved them all and listened to the cassettes (and, in the former's case, the vinyl) over and over. I watched him become Wacko Jacko, I whispered about the allegations along with everyone else ... but I still loved the music.

So, once again: I don't care about the bad stuff. Maybe later I will. Right now, all I care about is that the man whose music I loved for half my life is gone.

Godspeed, Michael.

I loved Michael... I don't give a crap what anybody says. I had a wicked crush on him during The Thriller era. The sad thing is, he's one of those icons that I could never quite imagine becoming an old man... :(

I wasn't sure if I was gonna do "Thrill the World" again this year... but now I really want to. You should do it with us...

Even if I lost respect for him as a public figure, I didn't lose respect for him as a musician. He even managed to evolve his sound pretty proactively when he was more actively producing albums, and I think more pop artists these days are drawing from his legacy than they realize (or maybe the Jackson/Quincy Jones legacy, but still).

I'd rather remember his earlier days, before the confusion and the pity. When he was performing, he had an intensity that shone so brightly.

I ran into this article last night: http://omg.yahoo.com/news/two-lost-icons-for-generation-x-a-really-bad-day/24354

I think this is very telling of our generation. Thriller was the very first album that I ever bought with my own money. Yes, the man was weird, but his music is timeless.

Yeah, I saw that article. So very, very true.

I so agree with you, Julie. And I am so sick of the people who think its cool to hate on him now and bitch about the news coverage. We lost a music legend.
